How to get contact followers in Zoho Desk

Retrieve a list of followers for a specific contact record.

The Follow feature in Zoho Desk lets agents subscribe to a contact's activity stream, so they receive updates whenever something changes on that customer's record. This is a built-in capability under the Customers module, accessible without any additional configuration.

Why this matters

When your team handles high-value clients, escalated customers, or accounts requiring close attention, passively waiting for ticket updates isn't enough. By following a contact, agents stay proactively informed about that customer's interactions across Zoho Desk. This is especially useful for flagging irate customers or high-net-worth clients who need a consistently elevated level of service. [3]

Step-by-step

Step 1. Log in to your Zoho Desk account and navigate to the Customers tab in the top navigation bar. Both Contacts and Accounts records live here, representing individual end-users and the organisations they belong to respectively. [3]

Step 2. Open the specific contact record you want to follow. You can search by name or email address to locate the right person quickly — this is the same lookup agents use when submitting inbound tickets on a customer's behalf. [1]

Step 3. Once inside the contact's detail page, locate the Follow option. Zoho Desk's "Following customer activities" feature allows you to follow contacts directly from their record, enabling you to monitor irate customers, priority clients, or any contact that warrants closer attention. [3]

Step 4. Click Follow to subscribe to that contact's activity. From this point forward, you will receive in-app notifications whenever relevant updates occur on the contact's record, keeping your team aligned without needing to manually check back. [3]

Step 5. To manage which contacts you are currently following, use the Contact List Views available in the Customers module. List views can be configured to group contacts based on defined criteria — for example, filtering to show only contacts you are actively following — making it straightforward to audit your follow list at any time. Common pitfalls

  • Confusing "Follow" with Help Center invitations. Following a contact is an internal agent action and is entirely separate from inviting a customer to register on the Help Center. Sending a Help Center invitation gives the customer self-service access; following them only affects what *your agents* are notified about. [3]
  • Account-level vs. contact-level following. Contacts and Accounts are distinct record types in Zoho Desk. Following an Account does not automatically follow all the individual contacts nested beneath it. If you need visibility on a specific person, make sure you follow their Contact record directly rather than just the parent Account. [3]
  • Permissions and agent roles. Not all agent roles may have equal access to the Customers module. If the Follow option is not visible on a contact record, check with your Zoho Desk administrator to confirm that your role has the necessary permissions to view and interact with contact detail pages.

What to check

  • Confirm the follow is active by revisiting the contact record and verifying the button now shows an "Unfollow" or active-follow state, indicating your subscription was saved successfully. [3]
  • Verify notifications are enabled in your personal Zoho Desk notification settings, so that activity updates from followed contacts actually reach you via your preferred channel. [3]
  • Review your List Views to ensure you can filter or identify all contacts you are currently following, making it easy to manage your follow list as your caseload changes. [1]
