How to remove tags from records in Zoho CRM

Bulk remove tags from multiple CRM records at once.

Tags in Zoho CRM can be removed from individual records or deleted entirely, depending on whether you want to disassociate a tag from specific records or eliminate it from your account altogether.

Why this matters

Tags serve as unique identifiers that help you search, sort, categorise, filter, and segment your CRM records more efficiently. [3] Over time, tags can become outdated, duplicated, or simply no longer relevant to your workflows — at that point you need a reliable way to clean them up without disrupting your data. Understanding the difference between *disassociating* a tag (unlinking it from a record) and *deleting* a tag (removing it from the system entirely) will save you from accidentally wiping tags you still need elsewhere.

Step-by-step

Deleting tags from the Tags menu (Desktop/Web)

Step 1. Navigate to the Tags section within your Zoho CRM account. Click Tags, then click Select to enter multi-select mode. [1]

Step 2. Choose all the tags you wish to remove by clicking each one. Once your selection is complete, click the Trash icon to permanently delete them. [1]

Deleting tags on Android

Step 1. Open the app and go to Menu, then tap Tags. [1]

Step 2. Tap More and then tap Select, or alternatively long-press any tag to activate multi-select mode. [1]

Step 3. Select all the tags you want to remove, then tap Delete to confirm the action. [1]

Deleting tags on iOS

Step 1. Open the Tags section and tap Select at the top of the screen. [1]

Step 2. Tap each tag you want to remove to highlight it, then tap Delete to complete the process. [1]

Disassociating a tag from a specific record

If your goal is not to delete a tag entirely but simply to unlink it from one particular record, Zoho CRM provides a separate Disassociate Tags workflow. This keeps the tag available in your account for use on other records while removing it from the chosen entry. [1] Navigate to the record in question, locate the tag displayed on the record detail page, and use the disassociate option to detach it without affecting other records that share the same tag.

Common pitfalls

  • Deleting vs. disassociating: Deleting a tag removes it from every record it is attached to across your entire CRM account. If you only want to remove it from one record, always use Disassociate Tags instead of Delete. [1]
  • Multi-select required: You cannot delete a tag by tapping it once on mobile. You must enter multi-select mode (via Select, More > Select, or a long-press) before the Delete option becomes available. [1]
  • Tags carry over on conversion: Because tags can be carried over when records are converted (for example, a Lead converting to a Contact), removing a tag from the source record may not automatically remove it from the converted record. Review both records after any cleanup. [3]

What to check

  • Confirm the tag no longer appears on the records you intended to clean up by searching or filtering your module using that tag name. [3]
  • Verify that any reports or filtered views built around the deleted tag have been updated, since those segments will return no results once the tag is gone. [3]
  • If you used Disassociate rather than Delete, check that the tag still appears in your global Tags list and remains attached to other records where it is still needed. [1]
