How to delete a custom layout in Zoho CRM

Remove unused layouts from your Zoho CRM modules programmatically.

Deleting a custom layout in Zoho CRM removes a user-defined page configuration and reassigns any associated projects to an alternative layout. This action is permanent and requires administrator access to the customization settings.

Why this matters

Custom layouts let you tailor how records appear to different user groups or teams. Over time, you may need to remove layouts that are no longer in use, consolidate duplicate configurations, or clean up your CRM structure. Understanding the deletion process—especially the reassignment requirement—prevents disruption to active projects and ensures a smooth transition.

Step-by-step

Step 1. Access the settings menu by clicking the gear icon in the top-right corner of your Zoho CRM interface, then navigate to the Settings page.[3]

Step 2. Under the *Customization* section, select Custom Layouts.[3]

Step 3. Choose the module type for which you want to delete a layout (for example, Sprints, Epics, or Users).[^3,5,8]

Step 4. From the listing page, click on the specific layout you wish to remove.[3]

Step 5. The layout editor window will open. Click the Delete link at the top of the window.[3]

Step 6. If projects are currently assigned to this layout, a reassignment prompt will appear. Select an alternative layout from the dropdown menu to which you want to move those projects.[3]

Step 7. Click the Reassign and Delete button to confirm the deletion and complete the reassignment.[3] The layout will be removed and all associated projects will now use the new layout you selected.[3]

Note: If the layout has no projects associated with it, you can delete it directly without reassignment.[3]

Common pitfalls

  • Forgetting to reassign projects: If you attempt to delete a layout that has active projects, you must select a destination layout. Skipping this step will prevent the deletion from completing.
  • Deleting a layout still in use: Verify that no critical workflows or user groups depend on the layout before deletion. Once removed, the layout cannot be recovered.
  • Insufficient permissions: Only administrators with customization rights can delete layouts. If you lack access to the Settings page, contact your CRM administrator.

What to check

  • Confirm that all projects previously using the deleted layout now appear under the new assigned layout.
  • Verify that users who relied on the old layout can still access their records through the reassigned layout.
  • Review your customization settings to ensure no orphaned or duplicate layouts remain.
